Betty Olroyd

Betty started Son Light almost 20 years ago when she moved to Chilton County to open an antique store. People brought in items to sell in order to afford food, and this lit a spark in Betty to do more. She began only feeding 10 families, but quickly grew. She sold the small store to formally start Son Light Centers. After 6 years, a man reached out to Betty and helped fund and grow Son Light into what it is today. He also assisted in opening a homeless shelter. Unfortunately he passed away, but his impact still remains in the Center. Betty feels that God answered some of her prayers by putting him in her life. She moved to Selma about 5 years ago, as it was in center of the area she was serving and has continued to grow.

Brother Grayson

Brother Grayson began his relationship with Son Light when he was introduced to Betty. At the time, she was feeding families by herself in her truck in Wilcox County. This was during a time when racial tensions were high in these areas, and Brother Grayson was impacted by a person of another race showing this kind of love. As their relationship grew, Betty began to volunteer with Brother Grayson’s church. The church provided many volunteers and Betty provided trucks and food.  They saw an opportunity to begin working together and build a stronger impact on the Selma community. They have learned to use the power of partnership to allow the Son Light center to grow and accomplish their goals.

He is the Senior Paster at Gospel Tabernacle Church in Selma, AL.
